SUMMER 2020 COMFORT
The opposite of comfort is stress.
The quarantine has somehow brought both of these dueling pianos out, playing out in different tunes
over the course of five months. Comfort is the absence of anxiety. The optimism of the weekend,
despite every day being Sunday. The hope of getting up before your partner.
Warm familiarity of your favorite Bravo housewives. Comfort is an elaborate omakase.
It’s take-out Pad Thai. It’s frozen pizza and red wine.
During lockdown, we are encouraged to not be productive.
Breakfast merges into the afternoon and work became an exercise in passing the time.
A way to occupy our bodies as we move from Feeding Time A to Feeding Time B.
Comfort is the squashing of that stress, the elimination of having to make plans,
worrying about what you’re cooking that night.
It is the idea that time, like life, has been suspended.
But that idea is fleeting.
Racial injustice.
A deadly pandemic.
Podcast gossip.
How much weed you have left.
If the perpetual A/C is going to blow the grid.
Comfort is what happens in between the stress.
Between the crushing weight of existing.
Between the news cycles, and the grocery store wipedowns.
Between the fantasies.
Comfort is a luxury.
A form of self-care.
A rightfully earned moment of respite.
